Open-Recession...

Recently, there was this thread on LinkedIn about an open-source project which lead me to think the following:

Everybody has benefited from OSS in one form or the other. Some others have contributed work.

But the interesting fact is that OSS was born during a period of abundance. How will it cope during global recession?

Do companies will have enough extra budget to continue support? Will individuals have the job security (in terms of income or available time) to contribute?

Hopefully, OSS will not suffer beyond repair for everyone's sake, but it will be an interesting development.

I think it's the other way around man. When recession happens, every company wants to cut funds for software, so it's proprietary software the one that suffers.

Well, If propietary software funds are cut, who is going to pay the bills of the open-source developers?

A lot of the OSS developers, say Mono, actually work for somebody else.

OSS Foundations? Do they charge for their software? Who will fund the foundations?

What about if Novell fired the Mono developers? Would they look for jobs to pay the bills or continue coding for free? Foreclosure anyone?

Could any of these guys continue put as much time into Mono as they are putting now?

Propietary software has endured more than Open Source software just because is an older model.

The only point that was raised was that the current state of affairs is a good test for OSS endurance and adaptation.

I actually use it and collaborated once.
